A River Runs Through It

A few days ago we experienced something that I never expected to see in the desert. I was sitting in my room (which is also my office) and I heard a loud banging noise outside in the hallway so I went to investigate…and nothing. After a few minutes the banging noise became more rapid and more apparent that it was not coming from the hall. I got up and went outside where a crowd had formed under the overhang to avoid the 1/2 inch hail that was falling out of the sky. Not much longer after that it began to pour. Now remember this is one of the poorest countries in the world and there are not many concrete roads or decent drainage systems for that matter. An hour later the 10 ft deep ditch on the other side of the compound (which is normally dry) was overflowing. A rush of water/mud, about 3 feet deep came rushing through the front gate flooding the motor pool, chow hall, and gym. Luckily, our dorms are located on slightly higher ground so we escaped the damage. It was definitely an exciting day in the desert. Enjoy the pics.
